Workshops and events

A special focus of the educational work at PAULUS is on events for children, young people, and educational institutions. Targeted programs have been developed and are offered to educational institutions not only during regular opening hours (12:00–6:00 p.m.) but also in the mornings (from 10:00 a.m.). Engaging workshops, combining discussion in the exhibition with hands-on activities in the learning space, encourage exploration of core societal values ​​such as tolerance, responsibility, and community. Artistic and craft techniques provide access to historical objects. Why, for example, was a coconut so special that it became a reliquary? Studying the goldsmith work in the cathedral treasury can reveal connections between people then and now.

1. "Shiningly Transformed"
How Simple Things Become Extraordinary

Gold is something very special, everyone knows that! But why is gold so valuable and important to people? We'll explore the treasures in the cathedral treasury and gild simple objects. Suddenly, they become precious!

2. "Preciously Preserved"
Treasures, Memories, and What We Keep

Duration: 120 minutes

Many vessels in the cathedral treasury are adorned with gold, silver, and precious stones. What is so valuable that it has been wrapped in this way? What is so precious to me that I would wrap it in a special way? Using gold foil and rhinestones, we'll create a personal treasure box for our own precious keepsakes.

3. "I write, but where to? - Words on a journey"
An experiment with thoughts and words
Target group: Secondary level 1 (approx. 10-16 years)
Duration: 120 minutes

Paul maintained contact with people and communities during his travels through his letters. Writing was his means of conveying thoughts, experiences, and messages. We will develop our own thoughts and messages from our encounters with the objects and spontaneously put them on paper.

4. "Leaving traces"
Creating a relief
Target group: Primary level, Secondary level 1 (approx. 8-14 years), Families
Duration: 120 minutes

In the exhibition, we will discover images that are not painted, but carved from wood. How does a smooth surface become an image? We will try it ourselves and create our own relief from modeling clay.

5. "Between the Signs"
Signs, Understanding, and the Mystery of Meaning
Target group: Primary and lower secondary school (approx. 8-14 years)
Duration: 120 minutes

Some objects pose riddles: Knots, shapes, and arrangements seem to signify something, yet the code remains hidden. Religious objects, too, once carried meanings that we no longer fully understand. We will develop our own signs for thoughts and messages and create a personal object that holds meaning for us.

6. "Copyed, Altered, Posted"
How Information Travels Through Time
Target group: Lower and upper secondary school (approx. 12-18 years)
Duration: 120 minutes

The original letters of Paul have not survived. What we read today is based on copies and translations. What happens to a message when it passes through many years, hands, and media? And when does an alteration become a distortion? We are experimenting with how stories change when we retell them, present them from our perspective, and spread them via social media.
