I'm leaving, but where to?

Paul in Prison

G. Serz, Nürnberg; Publisher: G. J. Manz in Regensburg

19th century

Copperplate engraving

Domschatz Münster, Inv.-Nr. Gr.119

After his arrest in Jerusalem (around the year 57 AD), Paul initially awaits his fate behind prison walls in Caesarea. Even in captivity, Paul remains in contact with the congregations. In letters, he encourages them to hold fast to the Christian path despite all opposition.

This is not the first time Paul has been imprisoned; he and his companions are arrested several times during their missionary journeys.
Yet, he never allows himself to be discouraged. The engraving shows that Paul had to wear shackles while in custody. Links from the chains used during his imprisonment are found within the reliquary statuette of Paul from the cathedral treasury.
