I'm leaving, but where to?
Walking Staff of St. Paul
19th century
Copper, gilded; marble; wood; glass
Musei Vaticani, Città del Vaticano
According to tradition, this walking staff accompanied Paul on his missionary journeys. His paths were long and arduous. The staff is a reminder of the hardships of these journeys and creates a special closeness to the Apostle. Since the 19th century, it has been encased in a reliquary. This underscores the spiritual significance of the walking staff.
The walking staff is kept in the treasury of the Basilica of San Paolo fuori le Mura in Rome. It is one of the four papal basilicas and is located outside the ancient city walls, on the Via Ostiense in southern Rome. The tomb of Saint Paul lies at this site, and the basilica was built over it.
