I'm leaving, but where to?

St Paul Window in the Choir

Max Ingrand

1950s

Glass print

Münster, St.-Paulus-Dom, Ostchor, in situ

Through his participation in the stoning, an inseparable bond is created between Paul and Stephen. Already Augustine (354–430) emphasizes the influence of the first martyr on Paul: If Stephen had not prayed in such a way, the Church would not have Paul (Sermo 382,4). Max Ingrand's Paul window in St.-Paulus-Dom takes up this invisible bond.

The window consists of three medallions. The uppermost one depicts Paul seated. He points to Stephen, who is kneeling behind him; Stephen has his hands raised in prayer and holds a palm branch as a symbol of his martyrdom.
