I'm leaving, but where to?
A stone from St. Stephan´s stoning
attested from the 13th century onwards
Stone
Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt – Domschatz Halberstadt, Inv.-Nr. 062a
According to tradition, the bones of Stephen were buried by the two Pharisees Gamaliel and Nicodemus. Gamaliel was the teacher under whom Paul received his education in Jerusalem. The tomb was rediscovered in 415. Alongside the bones, further relics of Stephen have been venerated for centuries. This stone of the stoning is one such relic.
Halberstadt Cathedral traces its origins back to Hildegrim (d. 827). Hildegrim was a brother of Liudger, the first Bishop of Münster. He was known for his devotion to the martyr Stephen and placed numerous churches under the patronage of the protomartyr. His veneration of the saint would also have been very significant for Liudger.
