I'm leaving, but where to?

Hand reliquary of St. Paul

Lower Rhine (?)

around 1460/1470

Silver, gilded; gemstones (topazes, sapphires)

Domschatz Münster, Inv.-Nr. E.39

This hand can only be identified as a reliquary of Paul through the inventories. Neither its design nor an inscription refers to the saint. The relics are hidden invisibly inside. The hand was sometimes used together with the silver bust of Paul during services.

According to the inventory of relics, it contains relics of Paul, including a relic of his hand. It also holds relics of other saints "whose names are written in heaven"—a circumlocution for relics that could no longer be identified.
