Horstmar Bowl / Paulus Cup

Johann Meiners

1651

Silver, partially gilded

Domschatz Münster, Inv.-Nr. DK.2020.59

Inscription on the base of the Paul statuette: ASPICE PAVLINAM PAVLI SVB
IMAGINE GENTEM [Behold the land of Paul beneath the image of Paul]
and on the foot of the goblet: TO THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS PRINCE AND LORD CHRISTOPH BERNHARD, BISHOP OF THE SEE OF MÜNSTER, FROM THE ECCLESIASTICAL AND SECULAR LORDS OF THE DISTRICT OF HORSTMAR—TOWN AND PARISHES—HAPPINESS AND PEACE DURING A LONG REIGN, 1651

The double cup is crowned by a figure of Paul. On the cup halves, a map of the diocese is engraved. The saint is depicted here as ruler and patron of the diocese in its extent at that time. The inscription on the statuette of Paul also designates the territory accordingly as the Land of Paul.

The double cup is a gift from the Estates of the Horstmar district to Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen (1650–1678), who had been elected shortly before.
