I'm leaving, but where to?

Paul's Head from St. Paul's Cathedral

Münster

around 1235

Sandstone

Domschatz Münster, Inv.-Nr. DK.2024.100

St. Paul is the patron of the cathedral in Münster. It also bears his name: St.-Paulus-Dom. A typical way of depicting Paul established itself early on: high forehead, receding hairline, and beard. This striking stone head shows him in exactly this way.

It was installed in a rose window of the cathedral over 800 years ago. A copy now hangs on the cathedral.

The head formed the center of the large wheel window in the gable above the *Paradies*. Below it was a head of John the Baptist; above it, a head of Christ. Today, all of them have been replaced by copies.
